Crime rates have dropped across New Orleans, and residents seem pleased with the overall job the NOPD is doing. Juvenile crime in particular has been a focal point, and former NOPD Superintendent Ronal Serpas highlighted some of the reasons he believes are behind this positive trend.
Harsher sentences and stricter enforcement for young offenders have been huge drivers in turning the tide, according to Serpas.
“It’s been evidenced in my career that when a group of young people who are committing a certain crime realize the power of the government to hold them accountable, they will pick a different path. They don’t want to go to prison for the rest of their lives. They’ll find something else,” Serpas noted…
