New Orleans, Gulf Coast humidity higher than in previous decades, researchers say

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – If you find yourself saying it feels more humid in the city, there’s now data to back you up.

“We have some preliminary results of this particular study, and what we’re finding is that humidity is indeed going up across the City of New Orleans and across the Gulf South, really,” said Dr. Barry Keim, a climatologist and program director of Environmental Health, Climate and Sustainability at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans.

Keim also is part of a research group known as the Southern Climate Impacts Planning Program (SCIPP). Keim says SCIPP recently began analyzing humidity levels along the US Gulf Coast and eastern seaboard. SCIPP specifically is studying hourly and daily dewpoint readings going back to the early 1970s.
