He couldn’t work in white pharmacies, so Horace Bynum started his own

Bynum Pharmacy was a safe haven for many in the St. Bernard and Desire communities. Horace C. Bynum, a pharmacist, civil rights activist and real estate developer, did not hesitate to help others.

This week, the Bynum family celebrated as a state Historic Marker acknowledging the pharmacy was unveiled at 3840 St. Bernard Ave.

The pharmacy “wasn’t just about medicine,” said Bynum’s grandson Adolph Bynum Jr. “He helped people whether they could pay or not pay. He gave back in countless ways.”…
