New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell made a rare appearance at City Hall August 1 to veto a proposal to allow residents to vote on whether future mayors can use the city’s attorney to sue the City Council.
The veto comes as rumors have once again begun to swirl that Cantrell could be indicted as part of a long-gestating federal corruption and bribery investigation.
Late last month the council unanimously approved a proposal to more explicitly define the role of the city attorney to stipulate they represent the interests of residents – not the mayor – and that they would not take a side in any instance in which the mayor and City Council were at odds. The amendment would not go into effect until after Cantrell has left office early next year…
