NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – The City of New Orleans announced that beginning Friday, August 1, speeding tickets will no longer be issued via speed cameras at any location in the city except in specific school zones. These changes are due to a new state law and ongoing infrastructure upgrades.
Under the new state law, speed enforcement cameras are now restricted to school zones that meet strict compliance requirements and are governed by a Cooperative Endeavor Agreement (CEA). As of now, those requirements are still being finalized, and many school zones have yet to be updated to meet the new standards.
Key changes include:
- School zone speed cameras were deactivated before the end of the last school year and will remain off until compliance is achieved.
- Speed cameras outside school zones were also deactivated starting August 1.
- Red-light cameras remain active and will continue to issue citations for traffic signal violations.
City officials emphasized that while the speed enforcement portion of the automated system is paused, red-light cameras across New Orleans remain fully operational. There will be no changes to the red-light camera program at this time…
