New Orleans City Council halts new police department restrictions on second line trailers

The New Orleans City Council Aug. 7 asked police not to enforce stiffer second line rules until there are more meetings on the subject, after the requirements caught many second line organizers off guard recently.

The police department notified second lines they would have to significantly more insurance and permitting on the trailers that function as floats in their parade, just weeks before their season starts on Aug. 24. Organizers said those requirements are confusing and way too onerous for them and many club members protested them on Aug. 5 at Gallier Hall.

Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick said NOPD was merely trying to enforce existing city laws and keep people safe from hanging out of moving trailers by mandating harnesses. But council members questioned the department’s interpretation of those rules…
