NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – St. Tammany Parish leaders have delayed a vote on a plan to stop sewage from leaking into local waterways. The council will wait 60 days before deciding so they can hear more from residents.
The proposal would have Environmental Services inspect all 36,000 home sewage systems in the parish over the next three years. Officials say many systems are old and leaking untreated or partly treated waste into rivers, bayous and lakes.
Supporters say the inspections are needed to protect public health and keep the water clean. But some residents worry about how much it could cost them to fix problems and about possible fines…
