Fire ignites renewed frustration over long-blighted Tremé property

NEW ORLEANS — When flames tore through a vacant, blighted home in Tremé last week, longtime neighbor Daniel Burton wasn’t home. But the next morning, he could still smell it.

“It just smells like charcoal, still does — you can probably smell it. Just a complete mess, glass in the street, two by fours in the street,” Burton said.

More than a week later, the scent of burnt wood still lingers when the wind picks up. He says the fire was just a matter of time, as neighbors say it’s just the latest chapter in a long history of neglect…
