Saturday’s sweaty Uptown parade satirizes recent jailbreak with the theme ‘To Easy LOL’

The Krewe of O.A.K.’s Midsummer Mardi Gras parade will help revelers escape the heat on Saturday night in the Carrollton neighborhood. OK, not really. But the risqué, irreverent procession may temporarily help them escape the dreariness of the dog days, anyway.

Escape is the whole point of this year’s theme: “To Easy LOL.”

That was the taunting, misspelled scribble left behind in a jail cell by the 10 inmates who broke out of the Orleans Justice Center in May. Despite the gravity of the ongoing event, Midsummer Mardi Gras parade organizers predict that some of the marchers may costume as tongue-in-cheek fugitives.

The parade, which dates back to 1986, began as a bar crawl in the Carrollton neighborhood, staged at the halfway point between the last Mardi Gras and the next. Over the years, it has blossomed into a complete Carnival foot parade, with more than 1,000 marchers and more than a dozen dance troupes, marching clubs and bands…
