Central Florida Air Force pilot recalls historic Katrina rescues

Retired Air Force Lt. Colonel Michael Brasher served 28 years in the U.S. military, yet no mission stands out to him like the rescue operation he led twenty years ago during Hurricane Katrina.

Brasher was among the first pilots to arrive in New Orleans after the hurricane, flying from what was known then in Central Florida as Patrick Air Force Base.

“We were not prepared for what we saw,” said Brasher. “We were just like wow. This is apocalyptic.”…
