The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) has announced that Yandra Gomez, the 30-year-old woman reported missing yesterday morning in Algiers, has returned home safely. As originally reported by WWLTV, Gomez, who has a reported intellectual disability and additional medical issues, had been the subject of an intense search effort by local authorities after her family reported her missing around 8:30 a.m.
Concern for Gomez’s safety was particularly heightened given her recent relocation to New Orleans just three weeks ago, leaving her unfamiliar with the area. On top of the anxiety caused by her disappearance, mistakenly, the family informed NOPD that she was not adept with her new surroundings, according to WGNO. The NOPD actively searched for Gomez in the area near Sullen Place and Berkley Drive, asking for the public’s assistance.
Descriptions of Gomez were widely disseminated during the search, with police noting that she is a Hispanic female, 5’0″ in height and 170 pounds in weight, and that she may have been carrying a pink backpack.
