Mayor LaToya Cantrell, Jeffrey Vappie have new trial date in federal corruption case

Mayor LaToya Cantrell and her former police bodyguard have a new trial date in their federal corruption case, one of the former officer’s attorneys confirmed Thursday.

Cantrell and former officer Jeffrey Vappie, who are accused of spending thousands of taxpayer dollars on a series of romantic trips, then conspiring to cover up their alleged affair, are now scheduled to go to trial on Oct. 19, 2026, said defense attorney Shaun Clarke.

Cantrell and Vappie pleaded not guilty last week to charges stemming from an Aug. 15 grand jury indictment. The 44-page, 18-count indictment included charges of wire fraud, conspiracy to obstruct justice and lying to a federal grand jury…
