NOPD crime lab director says full opening could be further delayed to 2028

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – The head of the New Orleans Police Department’s crime lab told a City Council committee Tuesday (Sept. 30) that the new facility’s oft-delayed opening with full accreditation might be pushed back another year, into 2028.

Dr. Shamika Kelley blamed repeated Council hiring deferrals, which the council says it will try to correct.

For more than two years, Kelley has been attempting to staff and certify the mostly completed $25 million crime lab. But she said now there are new problems when it comes to getting certified and opened…
