Former New Orleans 911 chief Tyrell Morris sentenced to 1 year for covering up his 2023 crash

An Orleans Parish judge sentenced former New Orleans 911 director Tyrell Morris to a year in jail and 1,000 hours of community service after his conviction last week on four felony counts for trying to cover up a 2023 crash in his public vehicle.

Criminal District Judge Simone Levine issued the sentence — a 10-year prison term with all but one year suspended — after Morris pleaded for his freedom, trembling in shackles and orange jail scrubs as he apologized for calling the judge a “b**ch” in a recent jail phone call.

The sentence also comes with $2,000 in fines, five years of probation and an amount of restitution to be decided later, Levine ruled. She cited the cost to taxpayers as the reason for not sentencing Morris to more time behind bars…
