Suspect in killing of Bayou St. John artist isn’t competent to stand trial, judge rules

The suspect in a fatal shooting last month near Bayou St. John is incompetent to proceed with the murder case against him and will be sent to a state hospital for treatment, a judge ruled Thursday.

Enrique Garcia, 26, faces counts of second-degree murder and simple burglary. Orleans Parish Magistrate Judge Juana Lombard said a team of experts found that Garcia “does not show adequate factual or rational understandings of the proceedings against him and they do not believe he has the ability to assist in his defense.”
