Potential ‘mass casualty shooter’ whose gun jammed at Harvey restaurant gets prison time

A man scheduled for retrial on charges that he tried to shoot three strangers outside of a Harvey restaurant — failing only because his gun jammed every time, authorities said — agreed to plead guilty to lesser charges, according to Jefferson Parish court records.

Ronald Barrios, 44, pleaded guilty Monday to three counts of aggravated assault with a firearm.

Barrios had been facing three counts of attempted first-degree murder. The court declared a mistrial on those charges Sept. 10, following a two-day trial, court records said. But jurors did vote to convict him of obstruction of justice in the case.

Unprovoked ambush

The confrontation occurred Jan. 21, 2024, at Zea’s Rotisserie & Bar in the 1100 block of Manhattan Boulevard in Harvey. A then-80-year-old man from Metairie, his 75-year-old wife and their son-in-law, 57, had just had lunch at restaurant when they were walking to their car in the parking lot, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office…
