NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – Xavier University of Louisiana on Tuesday announced a $38 million unrestricted gift (donation with no limitations on use) from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, the largest private donation in the university’s history.
The contribution is Scott’s second major gift to Xavier; she awarded the school $20 million in 2020 in recognition of its national impact as the only historically Black and Catholic institution in the United States.
The university said the new gift will support priorities outlined in its Centennial Capital Campaign, including efforts to enhance affordability, expand student services and strengthen pathways that help students succeed academically, socially and professionally.
The donation comes near the close of Xavier’s Centennial year, which the university marked with celebrations, alumni gatherings and continued national recognition for its programs in STEM, health sciences, the arts and social justice. Philanthropic support has also grown as the university prepares for its second century.
“This generous gift from MacKenzie Scott fills us with profound gratitude,” Xavier President Reynold Verret said in a statement. “To receive such an investment near the close of our Centennial year is both humbling and inspiring. These funds will enable us to expand our affordability initiatives, which directly support talented students from diverse backgrounds. Ms. Scott’s belief in Xavier’s mission strengthens our resolve to carry forward the legacy of Saint Katharine Drexel and prepare future generations to lead with truth, justice, and service. This gift affirms who we are—and who we are becoming—at a pivotal moment in our history.”…
