Two-alarm fire leads Touro Infirmary to evacuate patients, staff

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Touro Infirmary was evacuated due to a two-alarm fire that happened on Saturday, Nov. 22, according to Touro officials.

According to the New Orleans Fire Department, the fire began around 2 p.m. Touro officials said the fire started in the kitchen and “caused damage to dining services which will remain closed until further notice.”

“It was a lot of heavy smoke, and they struck a second alarm as they were evacuating the building to make sure that everything was okay,” NOFD firefighter Gregory Davis said. “The fire was contained to that area and into the ventilation system, but smoke went throughout the hospital, so they evacuated the entire hospital.”

There were 19 NOFD units dispatched to the hospital. According to Touro officials, the other hospital areas remain operational.

No one was injured in the incident…
