Louisiana groups helping Jamaicans rebuild after Hurricane Melissa

NEW ORLEANS — It’s a long road to recovery for Jamaica after Hurricane Melissa made landfall as a Category 5 storm in October, but organizations and businesses in Louisiana are stepping in to help.

Josh Gill, Incident Commander for the United Cajun Navy, landed in Jamaica on Sunday to deliver food, water and supplies to families struggling in the aftermath. Photos he shared show widespread destruction, flattened homes, and scattered debris.

“Some people have lost family, lost all of everything that they possibly own,” Gill said. “You look at the property — if it’s farmland, their land’s been destroyed, their crops have been destroyed.”…
