New Orleans councilmember calls for state help to deal with growing homeless problem in the city

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – A group of residents and police told councilmembers that problems with homelessness in New Orleans have gotten worse since the homeless sweep for the Super Bowl. From the French Quarter to Algiers to the Marigny, many say they want something done, but the city’s financial situation isn’t helping.

Before the Super Bowl, several state agencies stepped in to sweep up the homeless population and bring them to a facility along the Industrial Canal. But since then, residents say the unhoused have become more numerous, especially in the French Quarter.

“The situation is beyond the tipping point. There has been increased aggressive behavior, mental illness and substance abuse,” said Erin Holmes with the Vieux Carré Property Owners Association…
