OIG investigation finds no basis for Cantrell’s claims of cheating in NOPD promotions process

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – New Orleans’ Inspector General said no basis was found for Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s 2024 allegations of cheating and bias in the promotions process of the New Orleans Police Department.

“As the City of New Orleans contends with significant budget constraints, it is critical that the city use our limited resources as efficiently and effectively as possible,” Inspector General Ed Michel said. “In this case, baseless allegations delayed promotions to critical positions, leaving gaps in leadership during critical events, including a terrorist attack, the Super Bowl and Carnival season.”

After two-part promotional exams were conducted in July and September 2024, a list of 33 candidates for promotion was produced by the NOPD. After receiving the list, Cantrell told NOPD Supt. Anne Kirkpatrick that she had received oral complaints of cheating and bias on the exams…
