NEW ORLEANS — Nearly two weeks into a federal immigration enforcement operation in the New Orleans area, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) says more than 250 people have been arrested. However, DHS has not released details on how many people were detained but not arrested, how many were released, or how many have been deported as a result of the operation.
Immigration attorney Michael Gahagan said the scope of the arrests may depend largely on where and how enforcement actions are taking place.
“Are they arresting people on the street? Are they arresting people that are coming for their annual check-ins?” Gahagan said. “I’ve had reports from people that they were getting called earlier to come in for their annual check in, and they would arrest them on the spot for that.”…
