City of New Orleans announces Christmas Tree Recycling Program

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The City of New Orleans announced its annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to help restore Louisiana’s coastal wetlands.

Coordinated by the City of New Orleans Office of Resilience and Sustainability, the program allows recycled trees to be repurposed for coastal and wetland restoration projects rather than to be thrown away.

“By recycling their trees, residents are directly contributing to habitat restoration and helping shore up the natural systems that protect our region,” Chris Lang, Circular Economy Manager of the Office of Resilience and Sustainability, said.

For residents who want to participate in the program, these are the following options:

    • A contractor will collect the first 400 trees requested through that number.
  • Jan 5. – Jan. 9: Place trees on the curb by 5 a.m. on your normal garbage collection day. A recycling truck will follow the garbage truck.
  • French Quarter & Downtown Development District (DDD): Place trees curbside before 4 a.m. on Thursday, Jan 8 only.
