Former Ancora on Freret to get new life, inspired by a New Orleans restaurant of the past

The wood-burning oven at what was once Ancora will be roaring again soon, but instead of Neapolitan pizzas it will produce dishes from the regions of Spain, especially Basque country.

Ancora Pizzeria closed over the summer after 14 years on Freret Street’s restaurant row, a scene it helped cement in its early days.

Next, the space at 4508 Freret St. will be a new Spanish restaurant called Dolfy’s. It’s slated to open in the spring, perhaps March, as renovations continue…
