Rev. Calvin Woods: The true spirit of Christmas is in the giving of hope

For more than 20 years, the spirit of Christmas has come alive each December at Greater Liberty Baptist Church at 1230 Desire St. in New Orleans.

Established in 1853, Greater Liberty Baptist Church has long stood as a pillar of faith, service and leadership in the community. One of its most meaningful outreach efforts is Christmas on Desire Street, which has a clear and compassionate purpose: to bring joy, peace, love, happiness and hope to children and families in the Lower and Upper 9th Ward communities.

Christmas on Desire Street was created to meet both spiritual and practical needs during the holiday season. Each year, the church collects toys, monetary donations and essential items to ensure that every family who comes through its doors leaves with gifts and encouragement. For many families, this outreach has become a trusted source of support and a reminder that they are seen, valued and not forgotten.

At its core, Christmas on Desire Street is a holistic community initiative guided by clear goals that extend beyond Christmas Day.
