Cantrell vetoes spending freeze with two weeks left in office

With the clock winding down on her administration, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell this week vetoed a City Council measure meant to preserve new revenue built into the 2026 city budget.

The Dec. 18 ordinance forbids the Cantrell administration from spending proceeds from the Sewerage and Water Board, American Rescue Plan Act and Wisner trust fund, all of which the council added as general fund revenue sources on top of the taxes and fees expected to accrue to city coffers.

The ordinance also prohibits spending “any current funds held by the City” before Mayor-elect Helena Moreno’s inauguration on Jan. 12. In her veto letter, Cantrell said the prohibition is “overbroad” and effectively freezes all spending…
