Lawsuit filed after UGA student suffered life-threatening injuries in Bourbon Street attack

NEW ORLEANS — A University of Georgia student who suffered life-threatening injuries during a deadly New Year’s Day terrorist attack on Bourbon Street is part of a lawsuit alleging city officials failed to take steps that could have prevented the violence.

Elle Eisele, a UGA sophomore at the time, was among dozens of people struck when a man drove a pickup truck into crowds in New Orleans’ French Quarter early Jan. 1, 2025. Authorities said 14 people were killed in the attack, and the suspect, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, later died in a shootout with police.

According to court records, Eisele was on Bourbon Street shortly after 3 a.m., celebrating the new year and meeting friends, when she was hit by the speeding truck. The lawsuit says she sustained severe injuries that required extensive medical treatment and prevented her from returning to school last semester…
