As New Orleans continues to face a budget crisis, scrutiny is being cast on how the city is currently using its fleet of city-owned vehicles.
Louisiana Legislative Auditor Mike Waguespack is currently probing how the city is using its 2,800-vehicle fleet, including the hundreds of cars it provides to city employees for them to take home.
At least 935 municipal employees, or roughly 20% of the city’s workforce, drove cars home as of December, costing the city at least $41 million. Waguespack has questioned whether all of the employees being granted take-home cars actually need them and whether the city is selling vehicles it no longer uses…
