New Orleans Mayor Latyoa Cantrell made history when she took office; she leaves facing federal prosecution

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – As New Orleans Mayor-elect Helena Moreno prepares to take office, current Mayor LaToya Cantrell is in the final days of her second term. Cantrell made history in 2018 when she became the first woman to serve as mayor of New Orleans. When she assumed office, there was noticeable excitement. She spoke about the hopeful spirit of New Orleans shortly after being sworn in as mayor.

“There’s a lot of hope, and I see it even in your faces here. It’s in the bones of this city. And there’s a lot of hope expressed in the simple fact, the surprising fact, of my election as mayor,” Cantrell said in May 2018.
