Former New Orleans teacher sentenced in 2019 shooting case that left man paralyzed

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – Family members of Daryl Scott, who was paralyzed in a 2019 shooting, spoke Tuesday following the sentencing of former teacher Angela Filardo.

According to the family, the case began in March 2019 when Scott was confronted by Lynell Reynolds, who they say attempted to rob him. Scott’s relatives said Reynolds demanded a dollar and a credit card, and Scott complied, but was shot in the back as he turned away, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down.

Family members criticized Filardo, who they said was in a position of influence as a mentor and teacher but failed to intervene appropriately. They accused her of taking “the law into her own hands” and not using the time she had to guide Reynolds.

Scott’s mother, Latrell Taylor, said she was grateful for the work of the district attorney’s office throughout the case. She said the family was satisfied with Filardo’s sentence of two and a half years of hard labor and three years of probation.

Scott’s grandmother, Dorothy White, said she has been involved since the beginning of the investigation and that the sentencing brings her closure. Scott said he believes Filardo needed to be held accountable for failing to contact authorities…
