New Orleans schools are improving, but enrollment decline looms, superintendent says

NOLA Public Schools superintendent Fateama Fulmore touted the district’s academic progress during an annual address on the state of New Orleans schools, where she also described new efforts by the district to support the city’s independently operated charter schools.

At the same time, she warned that enrollment declines will pose serious challenge over the next few years — and likely force some schools to close.

In a wide-ranging remarks Wednesday afternoon Fulmore described the district’s recent academic success, including a B rating from the state – the district’s highest mark under the current accountability system – and improvements for students with disabilities and those learning English…
