Jefferson Parish schools to close for cold weather

Jefferson Parish Schools and administrative offices will remain closed Monday, Jan. 26, as freezing temperatures descend on the New Orleans area, bringing the potential for icy roads and unsafe travel conditions, officials announced Sunday afternoon.

“This decision was made in coordination with parish officials and emergency management partners to protect the safety of students, staff, and families,” district officials said in a statement on social media. “Cold temperatures and ice may impact roads, transportation, and campus operations.”

Several other school districts in the region also announced plans to remain shuttered as Arctic air packing below freezing temperatures and gusty winds threatened much of southeast Louisiana, prompting officials to close roads and bridges and open warming shelters…
