Xavier University receives $3 million from Humana to launch scholarship for medical students

Xavier University’s Ochsner College of Medicine announced on Monday (Jan. 26) that the Kentucky-based health insurance company Humana has established a $3 million scholarship fund for medical students at Xavier interested in pursuing primary care, internal medicine or maternal care in Louisiana.

Xavier and Ochsner Health founded the college of medicine in 2024 as the fifth medical school in the country at a Historically Black College and University. The school is slated to open inside Benson Tower on Poydras Street in the Central Business District and is in the process of receiving accreditation. The Humana Health Workforce Scholarship Fund was started in order to reduce the financial barrier to attending medical school and to encourage graduates to stay in Louisiana, according to the company.

Leonardo Seoane, the medical school’s founding dean, said the partnership between Humana and Xavier University existed long before the scholarship was announced. When the medical school was first launched a few years ago, Seoane said Humana stepped in to ask how it could help out…
