Tyrell Morris freed 4 months into 1-year sentence, attorney says

NEW ORLEANS — Tyrell Morris, the former New Orleans 911 director, was released from prison Sunday, according to his defense attorney.

Morris’ participation in the Department of Corrections’ programs, along with good time credits, reduced his one-year prison term by about two-thirds, despite an upcoming court hearing to challenge the sentence, his attorney Ralph Whalen said.

“Tyrell was released because he has served his time. He was in DOC custody, and they calculated the release date. Given his participation in DOC programs and the statutory diminution of sentence that was in effect at the time of his alleged offense, he simply served his time, even before the February 11 hearing to correct his illegal sentence,” said Morris’ attorney in a statement sent to WWL Louisiana…
