Audubon Aquarium Rescue helping ‘cold-stunned’ sea turtles

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The Audubon Aquarium Rescue is caring for two juvenile green sea turtles who are suffering impacts from frigid weather.

According to the Aquarium, the turtles were found near Port Fourchon and have been nicknamed Calvin and Martha. Sea turtles are cold-blooded, so they can’t regulate their body temperature. When temperatures drop, they can become hypothermic or “cold-stunned.” They can appear lethargic, floating at the water’s surface, or stranded on shore.

Calvin had buoyancy issues related to being cold-stunned. Martha was found floating at the surface. Both turtles received a full physical examination.

The Audubon Aquarium Rescue has had a total of 37 sea turtles in their care this year…
