Mayor Helena Moreno appoints a new emergency preparedness director. See who.

Mayor Helena Moreno has appointed Darrick Hesson to serve as director of the New Orleans Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness, rounding out her public safety team as her administration embarks on a top-to-bottom review of the city’s emergency planning.

Hesson, a New Orleans native, has more than two decades of experience in emergency preparedness, with stints working for state governments in both Texas and Louisiana, as well as on the local level for Livingston Parish and East Jefferson General Hospital. He began his career as a firefighter and emergency medical technician and was a front line responder during Hurricane Katrina.

“Darrick Hesson’s passion for New Orleans, experience, and commitment to advancing a progressive, resilient approach to emergency management are key to serving the people of New Orleans well,” Moreno said in a statement on Friday announcing his appointment. “His experiences have strengthened his ability to integrate public and private resources, innovate under pressure, and lead complex, multi-agency responses.”

Hesson will report to Deputy Mayor of Public Safety Michael Harrison, who Moreno has tasked with leading a 120-day assessment of the city’s public safety readiness. The position does not require City Council confirmation…
