Raw sewage has leaked into this New Orleans East canal. Residents say the stench is unbearable

New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board infrastructure has repeatedly leaked raw sewage into Dwyer Canal in recent months, creating a rotten egg smell that has irritated residents and that some say has caused health problems.

Residents and community activists say the smell has been in the air for years, sometimes fading during the day and growing stronger at night or when fog is present. But the odor in recent months has grown stronger, seeping into homes and causing headaches, watery eyes, scratchy throats and other irritations, they said.

“Every morning we are waking up and have to use, literally, hot towels to get the crust from around our eyes,” said Chadsidy Blackwell, who has lived with her mother on Cardenas Drive for about three years…
