NEW ORLEANS — A motion-activated security system at a Mid-City Rouses Market is drawing criticism from pedestrians and cyclists who say its loud warnings are disrupting their time along the Lafitte Greenway.
The upgraded audio and video surveillance system was installed to deter vandalism, Rouses’ management said. But some neighbors say the automated messages — including warnings that law enforcement will be dispatched — are unsettling in what they consider a public space.
As people walked and biked along the Greenway on Wednesday, a recorded voice echoed from the store’s property: “Warning. You are trespassing on private property. Leave immediately. You are being watched and recorded. Law enforcement will be dispatched if you do not leave now.”…
