Immigrant labor shortages impacting Louisiana crawfish industry

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Louisiana Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain says that only a quarter of crawfish processors have been able to bring in the guest workers that they rely on.

“Normally we have about 20 major processors,” says Strain. “Right now, 15 of those 20 have not received any workers.”

Much of the work of peelers in crawfish processing plants is done by workers on H-2B visas who come into the country and work during crawfish season.

“Many of these workers have worked at the same plant for five, 10 or 15 years,” says Strain. “They want to come here, do the job, and go home. These are legal guest workers.”…
