Water main break floods street near Tulane University’s campus, no boil water advisory expected

Water flooded Uptown streets near Tulane University after a 30-inch water main ruptured Thursday afternoon, the latest in a series of major issues with the Sewerage & Water Board pipes that carry New Orleans’ drinking water.

The break occurred near the intersection of Audubon and Willow streets on a line that has caused several other recent leaks Uptown. Some cars appeared to have flooded.

Steve Nelson, the city’s Deputy Director for Infrastructure and Public Works, said water pressure in the area has remained steady, the flow of water has started to slow and no boil water advisories were expected.

But the leak is expected to continue for at least the next day. S&WB Intermin General Superintendent Kaitlin Tymrak said workers were in the process of installing a specialized temporary valve, and New Orleans city officials asked residents to avoid the area…
