A serious arson case in New Orleans has now moved to the federal level, highlighting how authorities handle crimes that involve multiple incidents and wider risks to public safety.

The case involves Kyle Thomsen, a resident of the Bywater neighbourhood in New Orleans.
Investigators allege that:
- He set fire to multiple vehicles earlier this year
- At least nine cars were reportedly burned
- A delivery van belonging to Bywater Bakery was also targeted
Security camera footage reportedly shows the suspect entering unlocked vehicles before setting them on fire.
Shift from State to Federal Case
The Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office, led by Jason Williams, decided not to pursue more than a dozen state-level arson charges.
Instead:
- The case has been handed over to federal prosecutors
- A federal indictment has been filed
- The focus is on key incidents, including the bakery van fire
Officials explained that federal prosecution offers stronger resources and tools for handling complex cases like this.
