A New Orleans homeless encampment near the Industrial Canal set for closure

In January, after years living inside the abandoned navy base on Poland Avenue in Bywater, Tracey Gilbert ended up in a tent at the β€œEnd of the World.”

The apocalyptically nicknamed spit of land where the Industrial Canal meets the Mississippi River has long been a spot for dog-walking and fishing. But this year it became the site of another homeless encampment, as developers broke ground on a $300 million residential and retail redevelopment of the former base.

Gilbert and dozens of others who had been living in the property gathered what they could before city officials arrived to clear them out and moved into the nearby grassland. Now, about a dozen remain as others scattered or moved into subsidized housing…
