New Orleans attorney Jason Giles appeals conviction in staged-crash trial

New Orleans attorney Jason Giles claims prosecutors failed to prove their fraud case against him over staged collisions into big rig trucks, and that the government violated an agreement not to delve into the murder of a federal witness at last month’s blockbuster federal trial, in appealing his conviction.

Giles’ co-defendant, fellow personal injury attorney Vanessa Motta, made similar arguments last week after a jury on March 20 found each of them guilty on fraud, conspiracy, witness tampering and obstruction counts.

Federal attorneys say Motta and Giles face potentially hefty prison terms — at least 10 years apiece — at sentencings that U.S. District Judge Wendy Vitter has set for July. Vitter ordered Motta and Giles jailed in the meantime…
