Malfunctioning hydrant during Metairie fire reignites feud between firefighters, parish

JEFFERSON PARISH, La. — Saturday night, a fire erupted at a home on Garden Street in Metairie. Over the next 24 hours, it would turn into yet another struggle between a union representing local firefighters and the parish’s government.

In a post the day after the fire, Jefferson Firefighters Association Local 1374 said that when firefighters tried to get water from the fire hydrant closest to the home, it didn’t work.

The Jefferson Parish Water Department is responsible for maintaining the parish’s over 60,000 fire hydrants. The union argued the hydrant issue was the latest in a long and bitter fight between firefighters and parish leaders, largely over pay…
