New Orleans is clearing major homeless encampments near the riverfront, including areas near Crescent Park and the old naval base on Poland Avenue. The bill, which cleared the Louisiana House late Wednesday afternoon, would make sleeping in unauthorized public spaces illegal.
The bill, authored by state Rep. Debbie Villio, R-Kenner, has the backing of Gov. Jeff Landry. Critics say the measure would essentially criminalize homelessness.
“This legislation, which we are naming ‘Streets to Success,’ prioritizes and balances accountability, compassion, fiscal responsibility, and the long-term well-being of individuals, families and neighborhoods,” Villio said…
