ShotSpotter pilot led to one arrest, no lasting deal with New Orleans Police Department

Following an eight-month trial of ShotSpotter’s acoustic gunshot detection system, NOPD declined to ink a long-term contract, saying the system yielded little prosecutable evidence.

Over the eight months the system was used in the Fifth District, NOPD made one arrest for illegal discharge of a weapon due to ShotSpotter assistance. A witness also assisted in that investigation, according to the NOPD.

Michael Harrison, deputy mayor of public safety, said the city must prioritize spending on technology that produces results. “In this case, we did not have evidence to support the technology produced desired outcomes.”…
