Police Respond to Brooklyn Shooting During July 4 Fireworks, Several Injured Including Children
Brooklyn residents and visitors faced a terrifying ordeal on Saturday night as a mass shooting erupted during Fourth of July fireworks celebrations. At least eight people, including four children, were wounded in the incident that unfolded near Coney Island, turning a festive evening into one marked by chaos and emergency response.
According to the New York Police Department, officers were dispatched around 10:37 p.m. to the 2900 block of West 31st Street after reports of gunfire disrupted the crowd gathered to watch the fireworks. Among those shot were a 37-year-old man, a 33-year-old man, a 25-year-old woman, a 21-year-old woman, and four boys aged 14, 12, seven, and six years old. The youngest child suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
Eyewitnesses described seeing police officers carrying injured children in their arms as they rushed them to safety and medical assistance. One local deli worker told reporters, “When I see in the camera I see the cops running with the kids in their hands,” capturing the urgency and gravity of the scene.
The victims were promptly transported to nearby hospitals. While seven are reported to be in stable condition, the 21-year-old woman remains in critical condition due to a chest wound.
Authorities have confirmed that a firearm was recovered at the scene, but no arrests have been made so far. The motive behind the shooting and the number of assailants involved remain under investigation.
In a related incident on the same night, a fire broke out on the Brooklyn Bridge during the city’s fireworks display. Firefighters quickly responded to the blaze, using two fire engines to extinguish the flames.
The bridge had been closed to traffic for the event, and no injuries were reported. Fire department officials noted that such fires, while concerning, are not uncommon during large-scale fireworks shows, which is why crowd control measures are enforced to maintain a safe distance.
As investigations continue into both the shooting and the bridge fire, authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward to aid in the ongoing efforts to ensure public safety.
