NYC’s City-Wide Composting Program Expands to Hell’s Kitchen – What Residents Need to Know

Starting October 6, Hell’s Kitchen residents can finally start tossing their organic waste into designated bins for curbside pickup. It’s part of the new composting program that’s finally rolling out across Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island — and a big win for the environment, making composting a whole lot easier.

The current options for composting in Hell’s Kitchen include bringing your food scraps (excluding meat, dairy and bones) to the drop-off site at Mathews-Palmer Playground or utilizing one of the dozen or so orange Smart Composting Bins that can be accessed with the NYC Compost smartphone app.

Now, instead of schlepping your food scraps to one of these locations, just drop them in your building’s compost bin. The collection will happen once a week, on the same day as your recycling. You can either use your own bin (under 55 gallons, clearly labeled for compost) or request a free brown bin from DSNY. If you need extra bins, you can buy them for $43.47 from Otto , the official supplier.
