NYC loses thousands of residents; many move to Florida and other states

NEW YORK (PIX11) – Thousands of people left New York City for other parts of the United States in 2024, new data obtained by Property Shark shows.

Data shows New York City lost 352,100 residents, however, many of them did not move too far.

“Half of outgoing New Yorkers didn’t move very far: Data showed that approximately 161,400 of those 352,100 moved elsewhere within the state or out to New Jersey,” the study read.

Florida appeared to be a favorite relocation destination, specifically Miami-Dade County.

  7. Texas
  8. Georgia
  9. North Carolina
  10. Massachusettes

Property Shark’s methodology used domestic migration data published by the IRS in 2024. This data tracks year-to-year changes of address reported on individual income tax returns filed.

Data shows that earners more likely to move into New York City earn at least $100,000 per year. According to data, people earning between $50,000 and below the $100,000 mark are likely to move out of the city.
