NYC composting rules require non-garbage bags for disposal

NEW YORK (PIX11) – The period to be fined for not composting has taken effect in New York City but aside from putting your scraps in a separate waste bin, New Yorkers will need to put them in a separate bag first.

The Department of Sanitation recommends not using typical black garbage bags to line your composting bins. Instead, residents are advised to use one of the following types of bags to help the composting process .

  • Clear plastic bags, like those used for recycling
  • Paper bags
  • Compostable bags, available at stores
  • Small plastic bags

To help reduce odor from discarded food waste , the DSNY suggests putting your scraps in a bin with a lid that is lined with one of the bags listed above…
